Is Your v0 App a Working Product or a Prototype? Check the Missing Flows

Move your v0 prototype to production with evidence: identify demo behaviour, verify saved data and permissions, and test empty, loading and failure states.

A dashboard loads, the form closes and a “Saved” message appears. Has a customer record actually been stored? To move a v0 prototype to production, follow the result of each important action beyond the interface.

v0 can build full-stack applications; a v0 project is not automatically a mockup. Its full-stack documentation describes backend logic, data persistence and integrations. The question is which flows your specific project completes. This review helps founders and agencies find that out before inviting customers.

1. Inventory outcomes, not screens

Choose the journey that creates value: a customer submits a request, a staff member processes it, and the customer sees the result. For every step, record the actor, input, backend operation, stored outcome and expected confirmation.

Classify each flow as verified, demo-only or untested. Inspect for hard-coded sample lists, timers that simulate requests, buttons without actions and messages displayed before a response arrives. These are inspection targets, not claims about what v0 always generates. A deliberate demo is useful during design; it needs a clear label in your launch inventory.

Example acceptance note: “Create task” is complete only when an authorized request returns a stored record identifier, a fresh read retrieves that record, and a viewer cannot create another task. A success message alone does not meet this condition.

2. Prove the write and the next read

In an authorized test environment, create a synthetic record with a unique reference. Inspect the request and response, refresh the page, then retrieve the record through a fresh session with the appropriate access. Confirm the database or service receiving the write is the intended one.

Check related outcomes separately. A saved booking does not establish that an email was sent, a file remains downloadable or a payment was confirmed. If a flow is intentionally out of scope, hide or label it before launch instead of presenting it as operational.

An original local comparison: message versus stored result

On 2 November 2026 we ran an owned Python request-handler model with a temporary SQLite database. It contrasts a deliberate placeholder response with a handler that commits data. Eight checks passed:

  1. An empty list returns success with no records, rather than an error.
  2. The placeholder “Saved” response creates no stored record.
  3. A request without a recognized session is rejected.
  4. A viewer cannot create a record.
  5. Blank input is rejected.
  6. A simulated unavailable dependency returns an explicit failure.
  7. The backed create operation returns a record identifier.
  8. A new database connection reads only the committed sample.

What this demonstrates: visible confirmation and persisted outcomes are separate evidence. This was an offline teaching model, not a v0-generated app, a Next.js runtime test or a Vercel deployment. Sessions and roles were synthetic; no live HTTP server, browser states, email service or payment integration was tested. It does not measure your app’s readiness.

3. Review each server entry point and role

For a Next.js project, identify the Server Actions and route handlers behind the interface. Verify authentication, permitted role, record ownership and input validation at the operation that reads or changes data. Review the actual framework and authentication provider if your project uses a different stack.

The Next.js data security guide explains why page-level access checks do not protect Server Actions by themselves. Test owner, another account, restricted role and signed-out access. Hiding a menu item is not evidence that the underlying operation rejects an unauthorized request.

4. Test the states customers see when work stalls

Review loading, empty, validation, permission and service-failure states separately. Slow the request in your test environment: does the interface show progress and prevent accidental repeated submissions? Try no results: does it explain what to do next? Force a controlled failure: does it preserve the user’s input and avoid a false success?

For Next.js, consult its error-handling guidance for expected failures and unexpected exceptions. Add an actionable message and safe recovery path for the flow you actually built. Check keyboard use, narrow screens and Arabic text direction where those are supported requirements.

5. Verify the release environment

v0’s environment guidance distinguishes the Development environment used by its preview panel from Preview deployments and Production. Compare required variable names and integration destinations across the environments without exposing values. Keep private credentials out of browser code.

Its deployment guide also separates branch previews from the production URL. Run your acceptance journey against the release customers will use, including the final domain, authentication returns and the intended data source. A successful build is one check, not the entire acceptance decision.

What should a v0 app code review deliver?

A useful review to finish a v0 app produces a flow inventory, reproducible findings and a retest plan. Each blocker needs an affected outcome, expected and observed behaviour, environment, evidence and owner. Prioritize exposed data, lost submissions and incorrect paid access, then incomplete core flows and confusing recovery states.

Our AI-Built App Production Check assesses agreed application, data and deployment risks for v0 and other AI-built apps. You receive prioritized findings and clear testing limits. Repairs are scoped separately; the review is not a security certification.
